Then I went to the lab at school where the | keyboards weren't Dvorak. I couldn't type at all. Well, over here in this backward country, the geniuses who never believed that leaving good enough was an option have already reworked the keyboard so anyone accustomed to US layout will go from fast touch-type to hunt- and-peck anyway, so there is little point in /not/ optimizing the hell out of one's own keyboard layout. So, sometimes, this "localization" crap can actually be of benefit to users. Besides, I have one of those cordless keyboards. That should mean I can take it with me everywhere I go.
